TERME
GRADO
The ancient Romans knew already the particular
properties of sun and sand: they used to combine
sunbaths with early sand-bathing. In 1873
at Grado, thanks to the work of the Florentine
paediatrician Giuseppe Barellai, with the
birth of the first scientifically proved sea
treatment establishment, the thermal role
of this small island began. In 1892, as the
therapeutic structures had been operational
for a long time, the Austro-Hungarian Imperial
Royal Government, |
to which
at that time the island belonged, recognized
officially Grado as a treatment resort, recording
it into the official roll and establishing
the first Commission responsible for running
the sea treatment.

HISTORY
At the beginning, the ancient treatment of
sandbathing was attended by a part of the
Austrian middle - classes. That marked the
springboard for its great moment of fame which
corresponded with the 1960s when great sportsmen
and football champions from all over Europe
achieved matchless results thanks to the sandbathing
treatment. |

Thanks to the
specific proprieties of sand the privileged
location of the sandbathing establishments
on a seashore that is the only one on the
Adriatic Sea to face South completely, the
island can boast one of the most renown psammo-therapeutic
centres and amongst the few scientifically
recognised.
Psammo-therapy or sandbathing is the most
ancient treatment process of Grado's Thalasso-
therapeutic Institute. The sand bath, which
has been operative on the golden island since
the beginning of the XX century, is a therapeutic
procedure known even in the ancient times.
Signs of this process are to be found amongst
the works of Herodotus and Seneca. The sandbathing
treatment creates in our body a local and
general reaction related to a dry thermo-therapeutic
event. This thalasso-therapeutic procedure
can be applied to prevent arthrosic illness,
to treat post-traumatic pathologies (road
accidents, sport traumas...), to treat the
outcomes of juvenile articular rheumatism,
to treat some phases of rheumatoid arthritis
and non - articular rheumatisms, etc.
The sea thermal baths of Grado: a good idea
for wellness, all through the year, like sign
of the quality of life. "The well known
symbols of amusement "three S "
- Sun, Sea and Sand - are elements which,
if well proportioned, can produce well-being
all through the year. This is also a catch
phrase which has rightly become part of a
holiday at Grado, where tourism vocation's
main objective is that "the guest is
a jewel lying on the hospitality cushion".
Feeling well is the password for the new millennium
and, in the renovated wellness and fitness
area of Grado's Thermal Baths, you would feel
immediately much better! All through the year,
even during the winter season, you can chose
between diving into the large indoor sea water
swimming pool, a salutary hydromassage in
a Jacuzzi, a sauna bath, or even a steam bath.
There is also a new, large and equipped gym,
with modern fittings, where fitness experts
will help and guide you to tone up your whole
body, while to feel more beautiful in the
beauty centre you can choose a relaxing massage
or a body solarium treatment. |
